How Australians can Instill Agriculture Love in Their Young

One thing Australians can be proud of is their country’s unique weather, which lends itself to agriculture quite easily.

Many officials in the country have been trying to get people to care about agriculture once again. As parents, it is your responsibility to instill the importance of farming within your home for a number of reasons.

The Aussie Issue Parents Can Change

Australia is trying to find a way to become more self-sufficient. A lot of the food sold in markets come from other places, making the country pretty dependent. This means any tariff or trade war could lead to food spikes in the country. This may not be happening now, but that does not mean it is impossible. You can do something to protect your family from these food spikes and help your country along the way.

Part of the reason you should encourage your kids to get interested in agriculture is because it is one of the industries that Australia can dominate if young people get interested in gardening a bit more. Many growers across the country are saying that young people are simply not interested in this type of work, which is a trend that you can help reverse at home.

Encouraging Agriculture at Home

Encouraging an interest in agriculture may sound like a daunting experience, but there are a number of steps you can take to encourage agriculture at home. The following are just some examples:

Homegrown

One thing parents can do to encourage this lost art is grow some food at home. You do not have to buy a large piece of land to do this. All you have to do is grow a few choice vegetables, preferably organic, and show your kids how good it feels to eat the fruits of their labor. Now, it may be a good idea to take a few agriculture courses, especially ones focusing on organic food growing so you know what you are doing when the time comes. It should be noted that growing a garden as a family also offers an opportunity for you to bond over another activity.

Nearby Farm

Australia has a large concentration of farms, which could be near you, so why not look some up. Try to schedule a visit or two to some of these farms so that your children begin to understand how interesting this industry can be. This does not mean that you are pushing them to become agriculturist but rather attempting to increase interest in the field. Keep in mind that these are skills that your kids are going to be able to use as adults when they have their own home.

Community Growth

Okay, working parents may not always have the time to start their own garden at home and that is okay. There is another way to encourage this love for the earth by simply finding a local community garden. There are many communities, including urban ones, that are attempting to start community gardens. These little community efforts are powered by the people in the community, and your entire family can volunteer. Granted, you may not be available as much as the rest of your family, but this is a good way to get started. It may be a good idea to talk to other working parents in the community to see if you can work out a schedule so you can help each other with the kids.

Hopefully, some of these points make it a little easier for you to reintroduce the importance of agriculture amongst the young. It really does start with you, so give it some thought if you are interested in produce and how it is grown. Australia may not be able to thank you, but it definitely will be happy to see young people getting involved in this industry again.
